The rituals of courtship, romantic rivalry, and love play out three times as a man vies with a villain for the girl. In the Stone Age, the rivalry is set off by dinosaurs, a turtle used as a ouija board, and a round of golf with stones. In ancient Rome, the men display their brawn through a chariot race, using dogs instead of horses. In contemporary times, the man finds himself overcome by modernity, including a very fragile car.

Our hero is infatuated with a girl in the next office. In order to drum up business for her boss, an osteopath, he gets an actor friend to pretend injuries that the doctor "cures", thereby building a reputation. When he hears that his girl is marrying another, he decides to commit suicide and spends the bulk of the film in thrilling, failed attempts.

A few of the celebrities of the time shown are Enrico Caruso, Sarah Bernhardt, and Maurice Chevalier.

The film begins with methodical descriptions of one-dimensional, two-dimensional, and three-dimensional space. It then looks at a two-dimensional world inhabited by flat mice. It imagines how a human, from the third dimension could interact with that world. It then suggests how beings from a fourth dimension might interact with us. Next the film posits time as a fourth dimension, with scenes to aid comprehension. An off-screen narrator, graphs, and clever photography provide explanations and illustrations. The film asks viewers to use their imaginations.

Harold je coby naivní nováček na univerzitě posedlý touhou stát se obdivovaným hrdinou společenských událostí i sportovních klání, ale daří se mu pravý opak. Stává se jen předmětem posměchu. Zpět k výšinám osvobozujícího triumfu jej kromě studentského plesu, kde poprvé přestává být hloupě směšným panákem, přivádí sekvence závěrečného fotbalového zápasu. Zde Lloyd mistrovsky balancuje komično s patosem. V konečném vyznění se také (pro něj nezvykle) objevuje určitý společensko-kritický tón. V průběhu 20. let totiž vše, co bylo spojeno se studentským životem, včetně sportovních zápasů univerzit, prožívalo vrchol snobské mánie veřejnosti, vedoucí až k masově bezduchým imitacím.
