Ve světě prudkého rozvoje průmyslu a technologií, italského „hospodářského zázraku", její Giuliana přes veškerou snahu jako by zaostávala za ostatními a jejich způsobem myšlení. V nudné atmosféře amerického Zapadákova se dospívající mládež chce vymanit ze stereotypu spořádané rodiny, ke kterému je nutí jejich rodiče. Mladí nemají ve městě téměř žádnou možnost zábavy, jejich názory nikdo neposlouchá. Drobné přestupky v podobě alkoholu a drog se stupňují a dospělí se je snaží zarazit utužováním disciplíny a sankcemi. Situace v zapadlém městečku je napjatější, reakce na zákazy bouřlivější. Stále větší dusno spěje k výbuchu.

Film se odehrává ve francouzském Dijonu v polovině padesátých let 20. století a vypráví příběh mladého dospívajícího chlapce Laurenta. Ten prožívá první lásky, sexuální zkušenosti, hádky se svým otcem i nezvyklý vztah s matkou. Film byl velmi divácky úspěšný a výborně hodnocen také kritiky, když mimo jiné získal i nominaci na Oscara.
