Spisovatel Andrej Gorčakov, jenž je v Itálii ponořen do studia života a díla ruského skladatele Sosnovského, je stižen návalem stejné choroby, jež rozdírala již hudebníkovu duši – nostalgií, typicky ruským steskem po rodné zemi, z níž se lze vyléčit jedině návratem. Vize domova, probíhající před Andrejovým vnitřním zrakem, dokumentují stav jeho nitra, jež najde spirituální protějšek v postavě italského podivína Doménica. Ten v přesvědčení o hrozící zkáze světa naléhá na Andreje, a přiměje ho k symbolickému rituálu v lázeňském bazénu, po jehož vykonání údajně bude svět spasen.

Mona Bergeron is dead, her frozen body found in a ditch in the French countryside. From this, the film flashes back to the weeks leading up to her death. Through these flashbacks, Mona gradually declines as she travels from place to place, taking odd jobs and staying with whomever will offer her a place to sleep. Mona is fiercely independent, craving freedom over comfort, but it is this desire to be free that will eventually lead to her demise.

The Killers is a 1956 student film by the Soviet and Russian film director Andrei Tarkovsky and his fellow students Marika Beiku and Aleksandr Gordon. The film is based on the short story "The Killers" by Ernest Hemingway, written in 1927. It was Tarkovsky's first film, produced when he was a student at the State Institute of Cinematography.

Occasionally he watches two young children at play; the film sometimes speeds up. Handwritten words, like "dark void" and "waiting longing," cross the screen. Film and phrases often come in short bursts. Outdoor it looks gray and cold.
