An astronomer has a terrifying dream.

He then removes his head, and throwing it in the air, it appears on the table opposite another head, and both detached heads sing in unison. The conjurer then removes it a third time. You then see all three of his heads, which are exact duplicates, upon the table at one time, while the conjurer again stands before the audience with his head perfectly intact, singing in unison with the three heads upon the table. He closes the picture by bowing himself from the stage.

At the beginning of the scene Romeo in his gondola sings to Juliet a sentimental song, then goes away. Hardly has he departed when the colonnade falls to pieces, disclosing the devil. Juliet, frightened, runs to the window and calls Romeo. The latter attempts to enter and protect his fiancée, but at a gesture from the devil the window is instantly covered with a grating and Romeo makes frantic efforts to break it. The devil begins to dance a wild dance before Juliet, who is beside herself from terror. The devil gradually becomes the size of a giant (a novel effect). Juliet implores the statue of Madonna, which becomes animated, descends from its pedestal, and stretching out its arms orders the devil to disappear. (Méliès Catalog)

On the roof of an ancient palace appear a young Knight and his lady. While they are making love an ugly old witch appears and is rather troublesome. The Knight commands her to leave, and when he is about to force her away she sits on her broom and rises to the moon. After disappearing she causes various hob-goblins to haunt the pair, the last of them stealing away the lady while the Knight's back is turned. The Knight, frantic with grief, is suddenly confronted by a Fairy, who presents him with a magical sword, and tells him that he can use it to regain the young woman.

A family troupe of acrobats, made up to appear Japanese, perform various unbelievable stunts in front of the camera, achieved through a trick of the camera.

A group of people are standing along the platform of a railway station in La Ciotat, waiting for a train. One is seen coming, at some distance, and eventually stops at the platform. Doors of the railway-cars open and attendants help passengers off and on. Popular legend has it that, when this film was shown, the first-night audience fled the café in terror, fearing being run over by the "approaching" train. This legend has since been identified as promotional embellishment, though there is evidence to suggest that people were astounded at the capabilities of the Lumières' cinématographe.

Film se odehrává ve fiktivním městečku Santa Mira a hlavním hrdinou je doktor Bennell (Kevin McCarthy), který se vrátí do svého rodného města a zjistí, že se jeho obyvatelé podivně změnili. Malý chlapec běží po ulici a křičí, že jeho matka už není opravdová, a podobně reagují i jiní. Doktor Bennell brzy objeví příčinu: invazi mimozemšťanů, kteří prostřednictvým kokonů nahrazují lidi jejich bezduchou imitací.

Třetí část pětidílné řady o planetě opic vypráví o třech opičích vědcích, kteří uprchnou před nukleárním výbuchem tím, že s kosmickou lodí proletí časoprostorem na Zemi do 20. století. Nejprve se stanou senzací. Pak se ale stanou nepohodlnými, protože prorokují, že civilizace bude zničena atomovými zbraněmi a opanována inteligentními opicemi. Alegorická satira, za jejíž opičí kostýmy dostal John Chambers Oscara, poukazuje na nelidské jednání lidí.
