In the shadow of earthquakes which have devastated several parts of Italy, this poignant tale is centered around the last remaining inhabitant of a town destroyed by this natural disaster. Elia (Sergio Rubini) has no intention of leaving his ghost town of Providence which was struck by an earthquake years earlier. While he spends his days in the company of the memories of his wife and his idyllic past life, the rest of the population has moved downstream into the new community housing. Every so often, someone comes to visit him: the local teacher, his friend Gesualdo, and the mayor. But it is a different and wholly unexpected presence which begins to turn Elia’s solitary life upside-down.

Hlavním hrdinou tohoto filmu je mladý německý voják Ernst Graeber, který strádá na ruské frontě. Po několika letech na frontě Ernst dostane pár dní dovolené a tak se chce vrátit alespoň na chvíli domů. Jenže místo domova nachází trosky bývalého města. Nemůže najít vlastní rodinu a nikdo o nich nic neví. Prochází zdevastovanými ulicemi, potká bývalou spolužačku Alžbětu a zamilují se do sebe. Zbývá ale jen pár dní, než se bude muset Ernst vrátit na frontu a tak si chtějí užít zbývající čas na plno, protože jak v lásce tak ve válce není nic jistého.

Policie začíná řešit vraždu uškrcené oběti. Při pátrání zjišťuje, že tento případ má něco společného s případem, který se udál před 14ti lety na lodi v docích. Do případu se znovu zaplete detektiv, který po dvou letech pátrání nedokázal ke starému případu na nic přijít, ale teď to vypadá, že by se mohl konečně dobrat k rozuzlení.

The Polish underground independence movement is preparing their mission to rescue the famous activist. Piłsudski is freed, but he will not get back his idyll family life that he once knew. Uncertain years are coming, marked by revolutionary events, violence and betrayal. Pilsudski must find a way to man oeuvre on the boggy ground - between the conservative passivity of the Polish Socialist Party and the aggression against the invaders, resulting in retaliation. The year 1914 is coming, and the chance for restoring an independent country, independent Poland, is now or never.
