Hlavním hrdinou příběhu je středoškolák Raku Ičidžó. Přestože je jeho otec hlavou jedné z rodin jakuzy, Raku se o záležitosti jakuzy nezajímá a žije si vcelku normálním životem. Jednou na něm však při cestě do školy přistane jeho nová spolužačka Čitoge Kirisaki, která se přestěhovala z USA do Japonska, a je dcerou hlavy jiné, nepřátelské rodiny. Doma se Raku od otce dozví, že se domluvil s otcem Čitoge na tom, že budou Raku a Čitoge tři roky ve falešném vztahu, aby se udržel mír mezi oběma rodinami. To se ale ukáže být náročným úkolem hned z několika důvodů: jednak se oba dva nesnáší, dále proto, že má Raku zálusk na jinou spolužačku, Kosaki Onoderu, a také si Raku uvědomí, že kdysi slíbil jedné lásce z dětství, že až se znovu potkají, tak se vezmou. Když bylo Kotoko Iwanagy 11 let, tak za záhadných okolností na celé dva týdny zmizela. Děvče pak objevil náhodný chodec v parku, a to ne ve zrovna přívětivém stavu. Kotoko totiž ztratila jednu nohu a jedno oko. Co však nikdo neví, je to, že děvčátko unesli démoni a žádali, aby se stala jejich "bohyní vědění" - mostem mezi světem astrálním a tím pozemským obyčejných lidí. Od té doby Kotoko potají pomáhá démonům a jiným nadpřirozeným bytostem s jejich problémy a pravidelně celých 6 let chodí na lékařské kontroly do místní nemocnice.
